Testimonials from clients
Not really desiring to stick build, we decided to DIY our retirement “cottage” years ago, and thus began our search for the right kit home for us. After visiting dozens of forums and websites, we kept returning to kokoonhomes.com again and again. We have always tried to practice the 3 R’s (re-use, recycle, and repurpose) when possible. We were drawn to the fact Kokoon Homes Kits are made from recycled steel and castor and soybeans, are extremely energy efficient, and especially that they are affordable. One of the best features is you can plan/build the interior of the home any way you wish because there are no load bearing walls (in this specific home kit) down the center of the house!
Fast forward to delivery/set up day – Dave, us and 2 others unloaded the trailer, hoisted 19 panels up onto our 10 ft high platform and installed 13 of 19 panels in one day. After having seen how the panels fit together, the two of us installed the remaining 6 ourselves.
The biggest glitch to our project came when Dave delivered the roof panels. Neither of us realized how really large and awkward they were until we saw the panels on the trailer. The three of us managed to get one of the 16 footers on the roof and installed, but they weren’t the biggest problem. The 24 footers were so long and 50+ lbs. heavier… we immediately realized there was no way the two of us could do the roof by ourselves. We thought we had made a huge mistake in purchasing the roof panels. Being new to the area we didn’t have any friends close by that could help. Much to our chagrin, we hired 3 guys and used our tractor to help us with the remaining panels since our roof is 20+ feet high.
In retrospect, we understand the panels have to be large to tie everything together, which is especially important in a high wind zone such as ours. Also, we would lose the “cocoon effect” without the roof panels, and the house would not be nearly as efficient to heat/cool, nor as fire resistant.
We are older and slower than the average first-time home builders, but we are relatively fit for our average age of 61 years, clearly showing that the Kokoon system is a viable option for anyone who has decent DIY skills and a few friends.
Dave Rades has been extremely helpful throughout the process. He has offered suggestions, ideas and solutions in many cases. He is always just a hone call or text away.
Once we finish our home and actually get to move in, we will provide updates with the heating/cooling energy efficiency aspects of our Kokoon Home.
